THE DIRECTIVE From birth as we head out on life's journey we are told: "To get a good job, you need a good education." The subsequent message is: "go ito debt if you have to and parents, co-sign loans if you have to because if you don't, the occupational options for your children will be menial jobs at wages that will require your children to live out of their cars or maybe work three jobs.
I think about this written harped upon rule when as a Broadcast Journalist I cover stories that involve domestic violence. How much of this terrible tragedy I wonder was caused by the economic opportunity these victims denied themselves and the frustrations that led to. Was the myth of "you need a good education" so strong that it diminished their faith in themselves. They believed it and acted accordingly. (more to come) |
